Evidence in the United States and the rest of the world indicates that the morbidity and mortality attributable to asthma are increasing, particularly for urban minorities. Basic research, clinical research, and education/community outreach efforts have contributed substantially to our understanding of this disease. To counter the rising incidence of asthma, continued research support is essential to expand our knowledge base further through basic research and through the application of fundamental research findings to the development of effective treatments and intervention strategies. Asthma is and will continue to be considered an area of primary focus and high priority. Significant emphasis also will be placed on asthma and its effects on minority children in the inner city through community outreach programs of the AADCRCs and CIRIDs.
