Potentially Fatal Asthma

Paul A. Greenberger M.D., F.C.C.P.1

1 The Division of Allergy-Immunology Department of Medicine, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago.

Because of the many possible complicating factors in the management of PFA and asthma in general, individualized care must be provided. A reassessment of initial care should be carried out on return visits. Some generalizations include the need for an accurate diagnosis of asthma and identification of factors that exacerbate symptoms; avoidance measures when indicated; effective pharmacotherapy; a system for emergency advice and care; allergen immunotherapy in certain patients; cessation of smoking and recreational drug use; anticipatory therapy for exposures or upper respiratory infections when intensified therapy is necessary; assessment of social, economic, or psychologic factors; and documentation of noncompliance. Referral to a specialist should be advised depending on local patterns and availability.
