Studies of cell population control will continue to constitute an important part of the body of experiments designed to elucidate the cellular mechanisms of lung repair. As important as studies of mechanisms of injury are to our contemporary understanding of lung injury, as a body of knowledge, they are incomplete. We must synthesize this information with studies addressing the mechanisms of lung repair. It is with a more thorough understanding of both injury and repair that important therapeutic advances may be conceived.
