1) A simple classification of cystic disease of the lung is presented. Three major groups are defined: (a) Cysts of bronchial origin; (b) Cysts of alveolar origin; (c) Cystic bronchiectasis of a congenital nature.
2) A detailed description of the symptomatology, clinical and x-ray findings, gross and microscopic descriptions of each variation of cystic disease has been outlined.
3) Treatment including both supportive and definitive types is suggested. Therapy yielding best results in our hands has been operative removal of the cystic areas when feasible. With poor risk patients, Monaldi drainage may be of benefit.
4) Seven consecutive patients with cystic disease of the lung have been presented. All had surgical therapy of some type. In six the results were good. One patient failed to respond because of other co-existing pulmonary disease.
