Mediastinal Emphysema Following Tonsillectomy

1 The Medical and Surgical services of the Staten Island Hospital, Staten Island, New York.

1) Mediastinal emphysema, complicating a routine tonsillectomy, in an emotionally disturbed child is reported.

2) The mechanism of mediastinal emphysema is discussed, and the role of emotional influences contributing to the mechanism is described.
