Malignant Mediastinal Teratoma Simulating Cardiovascular Disease

WESLEY FRY MC, USN, F.C.C.P.1; CHESTER L. KLEIN MC, USN1; and HARRY C. BARTON LCDR, MC, USN1

1 The Surgical and Medical Services, U. S. Naval Hospital, Oakland, Calif.

A case of malignant trigerminal mediastinal teratoma has been presented, with a brief summary of reviews of mediastinal tumors made by other authors. Surgical removal of these tumors has been advocated by several authors. With this we agree, but also wish to emphasize the need for early operation following minimal delay in diagnostic procedures. The disease mortality is in the neighborhood of 100 per cent. The only hope for survival in the victim of teratoma of the mediastinum is extirpation of the tumor while it is still benign or before it has metastasized, or become irresectable.
