Acetylcholine administered in the form of aerosol is an excitant of the sensory nerve endings of the lung. It provokes cough impulses when these sensitive mechanisms are abnormally excitable. The acetylcholine cough test registers this pathological excitability of the pulmonary sensory nerve endings.
