A Resectable Form of Multiple Mesothelioma

MARVIN S. HARRIS M.D., F.C.C.P.1; MAURICE M. HYMAN M.D., F.C.C.P.1; and DONALD B. NEVIUS M.D.1

1 Cedars of Lebanon Hospital

Three cases of mesothelioma of the pleura are presented which were treated by radical surgery with one five year survival to date. The point is raised that the resemblance to adeno-carcinoma in frozen sections might lead the surgeon to abandon the operation in the belief that a hopeless situation exists. It is suggested that the pattern of clinical course, x-ray film findings and gross findings at surgery should raise the question of a resectable mesothelioma of the pleura in spite of a contrary pathological report based on a frozen section.
