Cholesterol pneumonitis is an uncommon type of chronic progressive pulmonary consolidation which may resemble bronchogenic carcinoma both clinically and radiologically. Five cases of this condition have been presented; all underwent thoracotomy and resection because carcinoma could not be ruled out. The pathologic characteristics and possible etiology of this condition as well as its differentiation from similar entities such as lipoid pneumonia, are discussed.
