FREDERICK S. CROSS M.D., F.C.C.P.1; EARLE B. KAY M.D., F.C.C.P.1; and GEORGE V. SMITH JR. M.D.1

1 The Division of Surgery, St. Luke's Hospital, and St. Vincent Charity Hospital.

1. The relationship of insufficiency of the cardiac sphincter mechanism and regurgitant esophagitis is discussed.

2. Surgical reconstitution of the cardiac sphincter mechanism as in hiatal hernia repair is suggested as proper therapy in selected individuals even though no hiatal hernia is demonstrated by x-ray.

3. Case reports of eight patients treated in this manner with good results are given.
