1. Hydatid disease represents the development of the cystic or larval stage of the tapeworm, Echinococcus granulosus (Batsch), within the human body.
2. The disease manifests itself most commonly in the liver with the lungs second in frequency.
3. The diagnosis of hydatid disease presents several problems and since patients may become sensitized to their own hydatid fluid, the Casoni reaction was developed as a specific diagnostic test.
4. Because the disease is irreversible, surgery represents the only treatment. An operative procedure for the removal of pulmonary hydatids is described.
