1. The ciliary mechanism, as a natural factor of resistance against respiratory diseases, has an important role in maintaining the health of the individual. Methods of treatment should be oriented toward sustaining the normalcy of this defense system.
2. New experimental data, supporting 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin) as a local hormone responsible for ciliary activation, have been presented. Serotonin is both synthesized and destroyed by ciliary tissue and can stimulate the beat frequency of isolated ciliated preparations.
