Five cases of lobar emphysema are presented. We want to emphasize:

a) the urgency of surgical intervention;

b) the variability of the causative lesions, some being instances of congenital bronchomalacia of the bronchial root, others of congenital adenomatoid cystic malformation; and

c) the value of intravenous steroid therapy in relieving postoperative pulmonary collapse or bronchospasm.
