The Importance of Bronchoscopy in an Ambulant Chest Clinic

Maurice Campagna M.D., F.C.C.P.1 and Harry B. Greenberg M.D., F.C.C.P.1

1 Department of Medicine, Tulane University School of Medicine and the Division of Tuberculosis Control, New Orleans Health Department

The value of supplementing a chest clinic with bronchoscopy is illustrated by an increase in the percentage of five-year survival cases. This is attributed to earlier confirmatory diagnosis and firmer-established rationale for surgical intervention.

The authors recommend early bronchoscopic studies of all patients found in a case-finding program with x-ray film evidence of obscure lung involvement. All patients with persistent respiratory symptoms and hemoptysis, but no radiographic evidence of pulmonary involvement also should be seriously considered for early bronchoscopy.
