The Importance of Atrio-Ventricular Dissociation in the Diagnosis of Digitalis Intoxication

Alfred Soffer M.D., F.C.C.P.1

1 Chief, Cardiopulmonary Laboratory, Rochester General Hospital

Analysis was made of the electrocardiograms of 11 patients who experienced digitalis intoxication. Such toxicity was characterized electrocardiographically by atrioventricular dissociation with non-paroxysmal nodal tachycardia and an AV nodal rate above 70. It was demonstrated in this series that awareness that digitalis in excess enhances impulse formation in AV junctional tissue can be of life-saving importance.
