1 Outpatient Chest Clinic, Veterans Administration Hospital
Two hundred and two cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were studied on continuous long-term chemotherapy with a relapse rate of less than 1 per cent.
One hundred and five control cases on short-term chemotherapy had a relapse rate of 30 per cent.
All patients included cavitary, non-cavitary, surgical and non-surgical cases.
It is our opinion that the minimum period of chemotherapy should be 18 to 24 months with no limit on the maximum length of time.
We arbitrarily decided that five or more years of continuous chemotherapy would keep the relapse rate low.
