1. Patients with mitral stenosis take up significantly less oxygen during the steady state of muscular exercise than do normal individuals of the same sex and body size while performing similar work loads.
2. The reduced oxygen uptake in patients with mitral stenosis cannot be explained on the basis of slower attainment of the steady state, nor on the basis of increased utilization of anaerobic energy sources.
