1 Department of Medicine (B), Asaf Harofe Government Hospital
Most of the myotonic dystrophy patients suffer from chronic bronchitis and repeated bronchopneumonias. Six of ten of our patients suffered from these diseases. In two cases, aspiration of iodized oil (Lipiodol) into the bronchial tree was observed during swallowing of this substance without the patients noticing it. It seems that there exists a possibility of repeated silent aspiration of the infected material from the nasopharynx and food in MD patients and that it is an important factor which, together with weakness of the respiratory muscles and myotony of the diaphragm, causes bronchopneumonias and development of bronchiectases.
