Fluid Levels in Emphysematous Bullae

Emil Rothstein M.D., F.C.C.P.1 and Benjamin F. Harley Jr. M.D.2

1 Chief, Tuberculosis Service
2 Chief, Radiology Service

Six cases of secondarily infected pre-existing emphysematous bullae are described. Fluid levels developed in the bullae, presenting interesting and potentially confusing radiographic pictures. Five responded well to conventional medical treatment; none went on to suppuration. The sixth, associated with bronchogenic carcinoma, was confirmed at the time of pulmonary resection.
