A Study of the Frequency of Associated Cardiac and Pulmonary Disease in Patients with Defects of the Atrial Septum Coming to Necropsy

Neil S. Cherniack M.D.1

1 Instructor in Medicine, University of Illinois College of Medicine

The hospital records of 80 cases of defects of the atrial septum in which necropsy was performed have been reviewed.

Among these patients, 46 had at least one and frequently more than one additional congenital cardiac anomaly.

Fourteen had significant defects without any other congenital defect besides partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage; 11 of these were in congestive heart failure at the time of death. Almost all of the eleven had some other important disease of the heart or lungs.

It is suggested that other congenital disorders and acquired diseases of the heart frequently cause failure in patients with atrial septal defect.
