New Method of Surgical Treatment of Cancer of the Lung with Administration of Roentgen-Radium Therapy during Operation

I. T. Shevchenko M.D.1

1 American College of Chest Physicians, New Delhi, India

The method of radium-roentgen surgery of cancer of the lung suggested by us not only extends the relapseless period of the disease, but also has these advantages: it considerably reduces the periods of special and combined treatment of the patient; the patient more easily tolerates the radiation load during the operation than before and after the operation; contact therapy produces a greater antiblastic effect.

We are accumulating clinical observations.

In addition to the generally accepted criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of any method of treatment with regard to longterm survival, data on the development of relapses and metastases within short periods of time are also of essential importance.

The immediate results of radium-roentgen surgery of cancer of the lung warrant its recommendation for introduction into practice.
