Five of eight patients found at necropsy to have cryptococcosis, and only 12 of 51 randomly selected controls had received corticosteroid therapy within the last two years of life. Although the sample is not large, enhanced susceptibility to cryptococcus infection resulting from long term corticosteroid therapy is strongly suggested.
