Our experience with the use of a hematoporphyrin derivative and fluorescent endoscopy as a new aid for the detection and management of malignant disease has been presented. Fifty patients have been studied thus far. Although we do not favor the use of this new technic in all endoscopic procedures, we do advocate its use whenever there is a problem in the detection of malignant disease or whenever there is a question of whether or not a known lesion is too extensive to be helped by an operation.
