A retrospective study of the incidence of myocardial infarction in 100 necropsied patients with pulmonary emphysema was undertaken. A total of 17 per cent myocardial infarctions were found as compared to 30 per cent myocardial infarctions in a control group of 100 consecutive patients without emphysema. The incidence of silent infarcts was much higher among the emphysema patients (41.2 per cent) as compared to the control group (20 per cent).
Myocardial infarction seems to occur less frequently and is less often recognized in patients with pulmonary emphysema than in the general population. Hypoxia with increase in coronary collateral circulation seems to be a reasonable explanation.
