1 Department of Surgery of the University of Minnesota and the Tuberculosis Service of the Anoka State Hospital

The facility with which the data on large numbers of patients can be handled by a punch card system was the major factor which lead to our development of this system.5, 6, 7 The McBee card was chosen over an IBM punch card for three reasons. First, the McBee card will handle as much data as several IBM cards. Secondly, the information from which the card is punched is recorded directly on the card rather than on a separate set of data sheets. Finally, with the McBee system data can be handled and tabulated with a minimum of special equipment both for punching and for sorting.

The punch card record system described here is now in use at the Anoka State Hospital and has proved simple to use and provides ready access to the coded information.
