Mortality Experience in the Current Practice of Cardiac Surgery

1. The International Classification of Diseases codes, related to cardiac conditions and surgery are in need of clarification and expansion that hospital records and vital statistics may be meaningfully used in research.

2. The problems inherent in the referral of patients to distant centers are many. It is hoped that this survey will assist physicians and surgeons in deciding which patient should be urged to make the additional effort attendant on treatment in a more highly specialized and often distant center, and which should be offered the convenience of treatment close to their homes.
