1 Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Southern California School of Medicine
The best possible known treatments for pulmonary hypertension are:
1. Correction of an operable lesion.
2. The adequate use of oxygen and other vasodilating drugs while the disease is in the vasoconstrictive stage.
3. Prevention of pulmonary tract infections or clearing such adequately using the indicated antibiotic after culture and sensitivity studies.
4. The prevention of obstructive changes in the pulmonary arteries by maintenance of a good cardiac output and the prevention of multiple thrombi.
5. Since all medical management is disappointing, prophylaxis is the best therapy.
