1 Departments of Surgery and Otolaryngology and the Section on Chest Diseases, Ochsner Clinic
Nine cases of primary epidermoid carcinoma of the lung and a second primary epidermoid cancer of the bronchus or upper airway have been presented. All patients smoked excessively. Inasmuch as the entire respiratory tract is bathed with the same carcinogen, it is not surprising to find instances of multiple primary cancers arising from the epithelium of the respiratory tract. This, we believe, offers additional evidence of the causative relationship of smoking to cancer of the respiratory tract.
