Pulmonary compliance is a sensitive indicator of the elasticity of the lung. Subjects with heart disease have a drop in compliance when left ventricular failure develops. This decrement can be demonstrated in these patients after a standard exercise test, whereas those with normal hearts show no such change.
Ninety-three individuals under regular surveillance at the Cardiovascular Health Center of the Albany Medical College underwent pulmonary compliance measurements before and after standard treadmill exercise. Forty per cent showed a drop in compliance. Ten of the 93 men had abnormal electrocardiograms. Eight of these had a drop in compliance.
Followup study of this population will permit a more accurate assessment of the sensitivity of this technique in predicting heart disease.
