Thomas L. Petty M.D.1 and Mason Wilkins M.D.2

1 Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Colorado School of Medicine
2 Department of Medicine, University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Webb-Waring Institute for Medical Research, Denver, Colorado

1. Five cases, representing the five varieties of rheumatoid pulmonary disease, have been presented. These include chronic pneumonitis, diffuse interstitial fibrosis, discrete pulmonary nodules with or without cavitation, rheumatoid pneumoconiosis (Caplan's syndrome), and rheumatoid pleurisy with effusion.

2. The diagnosis of rheumatoid lung is suggested in patients with rheumatoid arthritis on roentgenographic grounds. Other diseases which give a similar x-ray picture must be excluded.

3. The diagnosis is confirmed by lung biopsy.
