Tracheostomy

A technique facilitating postoperative management and avoiding complications

Alejandro H. Villegas M.D., F.C.C.P.1

1 2nd Chair of Clinical Surgery, University of Buenos Aires, Medical School, Hospital Ramos Mejía

A tracheostomy technique is presented. Main advantages are facilitation of postoperative care and avoidance of complications.

Sequence of maneuvers are illustrated in a series of surgical drawings. Division of the thyroid isthmus for proper exposure, resection of a small "disc" of the anterior tracheal wall and "anchoring" of the cut edges of the trachea to the dermis are considered important points. No special instruments are required.

No significant postoperative complication attributable to the technique employed or tracheal sequels were observed in a consecutive series of 65 adult cases over a period of three years (1961-64).
