Pulmonary Survey in the Aged

(1) In elderly subjects, the forced vital capacity and timed expiratory volumes are lower than is generally appreciated.

(2) This pulmonary restriction and airway reduction is affected by various pulmonary and extra pulmonary factors.

(3) In men, reduced function paralleled bronchopulmonary disorder and paralleled smoking.

(4) Function tests were less specific in women, but bronchopulmonary disease was also more common among the smokers.
