Hiatal hernia with reflux has been found in 30 per cent of all asthmatics studied recently. In 24 patients, the hernia was repaired and the valve at the esophagogastric junction was restored. Eighteen of these patients have been followed for more than six months. In all but one, correction of this mechanical defect resulted in improvement or complete relief.
In the asthmatic patient, organic trigger mechanisms may exist. An intrapulmonary location is more common, but an extrapulmonary location should not be overlooked. Spillover of material from the gastrointestinal system to the bronchial system may be at fault.
