Kidney function can be rapidly and serially investigated by osmolality and by double beam infrared spectrophotometry. Osmolality measures total solutes. IR spectroscopy measures urea concentrations. These methods confirm that significant reduction in renal function occurs during surgical procedures, especially those utilizing cardiopulmonary bypass.
