Angioconray, normal saline solution and a dextran solution prepared to be isoviscous with respect to Angioconray were injected into the pulmonary artery of an intact dog. Pulmonary artery, left atrial and systemic pressure increased immediately postinjection. Pulmonary artery and left atrial pressure remained significantly elevated for 90 seconds or longer following Angioconray injection, but not after injection of saline or dextran. Angioconray also produced electrocardiographic and cardiac output changes. A mechanism for the interrelation of events following injection of contrast media is proposed.
