1. The distribution of inspired gas was studied by the helium equilibration method using a commercially available apparatus. Of the 26 patients studied, 11 had no cardiac or pulmonary disease, ten had interstitial lung disease and five had obstructive bronchopulmonary disease.
2. Previous methods of analysis of the helium equilibration curves were discussed, and a method of standardized plotting was proposed.
3. The finding of a significant degree of uneven ventilation in obstructive disease was once more confirmed.
4. There was no significant difference in the helium equilibration curves in the control group compared with those of patients with interstitial lung disease.
