Ischemic Heart Disease in Monozygotic Twins

Albert H. Douglas M.D., F.C.C.P.1

1 Director of Medicine

Three sets of monozygotic twins with proved ischemic heart disease are reported. All were men. Hypercholesterolemia was observed in the five instances in which determinations were available. Two of the three fathers died of heart attacks. The age of onset of ischemic heart disease was similar and within a three year range for two of the sets, and in the third set coronary disease appeared at a relatively young age in both twins. The clinical course was significantly different in brothers with the same genetic background, demonstrating the importance of environmental factors. In one set, diabetes mellitus and atrial fibrillation were discovered at about the same age.
