Surgical Complications of Staphylococcal Pneumonia in Infancy and Childhood

Albert Mowlem M.D.1 and Frederick S. Cross M.D., F.C.C.P.1

1 Division of Surgery, St. Luke's Hospital

A review is made of 41 infants and children treated for staphylococcal pneumonia, four of whom died. Particular emphasis is made on diagnosis, bacteriology and antibiotic therapy, surgical complications encountered and the appropriate treatment for these complications.

With a high index of suspicion and early recognition of this disease, adequate antibiotic therapy, as well as vigorous threatment of the surgical complications, the morbidity and mortality of staphylococcal pneumonia in infants and children can be reduced significantly.
