Replacement of the Cardioesophageal Sphincter with the Ileocecal Valve

Panagiotis N. Symbas M.D., F.C.C.P.1; K. Aydin M.D.2; and Osler A. Abbott M.D., F.C.C.P.2

2 Department of Surgery, Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine

1. The function of the transplanted ileocecal valve in the region of the cardioesophageal sphincter was evaluated in experimental animals.

2. The ileocecal valve at this location appeared to be fully as effective in preventing regurgitation of gastric contents as was the normal cardioesophageal sphincter.

3. Whether the observed findings were the result solely of the valvular function of the transplanted ileocecal segment or of the valvular and the sphincteric action cannot be defined from presently available data.
