A Review and Reappraisal of Emphysema

The advancement of knowledge concerning emphysema has been restricted because of confusing and outdated nomenclature. There is a need for new and more precise terms concerned with the entities heretofore considered under the general topic of emphysema. These terms must be universally accepted and understood among the different branches of medicine. This unification would increase the physiologic, pathologic and clinical correlation of knowledge.

Our inadequate knowledge concerning the etiology of emphysema makes an etiologic classification unsatisfactory. The following clasification is based upon pathologic findings.
