Total Correction of Tetralogy of Fallot

Review of 315 Cases with Late Results

R. Zenker M.D., F.C.C.P.1 and W. Klinner M.D.1

1 Department of Surgery, University of Munich

Our experience with 315 cases of total correction of tetralogy of Fallot shows that this operation, introduced by Lillehei, can be regarded as successful treatment for the malformation. The mortality rate in patients older than five-six years of age can be held to 10 per cent in the hands of an experienced surgeon. In Our statistics, there was a late mortality rate of 5 per cent, due to cases with unfavorable anatomic conditions which could not be completely corrected. A seven year follow up reveals that 90 per cent of the successfully operated patients are able to live a normal pattern of life.
