1 Chest Service, U.S. Naval Hospital
A study of 68 patients with far advanced (inoperable) bronchogenic carcinoma indicated that cobalt teletherapy (5000r) modestly prolonged the survival of patients with squamous cell tumors. Radiation therapy was also occasionally of benefit in the palliation of pain and mediastinal compression. Treatment of patients with anaplastic carcinoma did not prolong survival and resulted in increased morbidity. The mode of death in all cases was characterized by progressive weight loss, weakness, and shortness of breath.
