Four morphologic types of primary bronchogenic carcinoma are defined. The development of the neoplasm, as well as its anatomic and clinical manifestations, are predicted upon the various potentials of the cells. The latter is determined by the site of origin, namely: the main, lobar, segmental and subsegmental peripheral bronchi.
Several factors of oncogenesis are discussed, together with the bearing of biologic concepts on the indications for elective pulmonary surgery.
