The surgical treatment of malignant costal and sternal tumors should consist of "radical" resection of the thoracic wall. The minimal extent of such resection is described.
Radical resection of the thoracic wall has been performed in five cases at the Groningen University Surgical Clinic since 1962. The reconstruction of a stable thoracic wall is discussed. The loss of pulmonary function which an extensive resection of the thoracic wall entails, is readily acceptable in an otherwise healthy patient. In two cases, this loss was determined bronchospirometrically (Table 3).
