Diagnostic Pneumomediastinography

Cyril Simecek M.D.1

1 Department of Pulmonary Diseases, Charles University

Results obtained in 1291 examinations by diagnostic pneumomediastinum by the pertracheal route and 64 examinations performed by the paravertebral route, clearly revealed the advantages of the former method, which was never accompanied by complications. Technical failure was registered in only 12 persons, whereas with the paravertebral route, complications occurred in ten cases and insufilation failed in another 17 instances.

An analysis of results obtained in 493 cases of lung cancer, 40 of esophageal cancer, 92 mediastinal tumors, 232 cases of tuberculosis and sarcoidosis of intrathoracic lymph nodes, 52 malignant lymphomas and other disorders, revealed that this examination is indicated chiefly in malignant disease of the lung and mediastinum, mediastinal tumors, intrathoracic lymphadenitis and for surveying the large vessels and mediastinal pleura.
