Open Thoracotomy Tube Cavernostomy for Pulmonary Tuberculosis

David V. Pecora M.D.1

1 Ray Brook State Tuberculosis Hospital

Open thoracotomy tube cavernostomy is a simple procedure which can be used alone or in combination with pulmonary resection or small thoracoplasty to conserve functioning tissue. It is indicated in the treatment of cavities infected by viable organisms resistant to two or more major drugs, which cannot be resected without removal of large amounts of relatively normal tissue. The immediate risks of this operation are similar to those of small pulmonary resection. Because of its tissue sparing qualities it can be emploved in patients whose disease is too extensive to be resected totally or treated by thoracoplasty alone.
