Diphenylhydantoin was administered to 11 patients with digitalis intoxication. In the twelfth patient, PAT with block appeared during diphenylhydantoin prophylactic measure. The drug was used intravenously in ten patients.
Diphenylhydantoin is rapidly and highly effective in abolishing ventricular arrhythmias (tachycardia, bigeminy, and multifocal premature ventricular beats), but it is less effective in abolishing atrial arrhythmias. Diphenylhydantoin is a safe antiarrhythmic drug when properly used.
