The Role of Surgery in the Management of Generalized Pulmonary Emphysema without Blebs or Bullae

Milton B. Kress M.D., F.C.C.P.1; R. V. Goco M.D.1; and Otto C. Brantigan M.D., F.C.C.P.1

1 Baltimore, Maryland

It is our opinion that in properly selected patients, surgery can play a significantly beneficial role in the treatment of generalized pulmonary empysema. We have purposely selected cases without any evidence of blebs and bullae in association with their generalized emphysema to show that these patients may be improved from surgical intervention as well as those in which large blebs and bullae are resected.
