1 Medical Service, Veterans Administration Hospital
The measurement of brachial artery and ventricular dp/dt has become an important clinical tool. Heretofore unreported postural effects on this measurement have been presented. All patients studied, except those with aortic insufficiency, showed little change or a fall in the brachial artery dp/dt on standing, while patients with aortic insufficiency always showed an increase. This increase in the speed of rise of pressure must be attributed to increased vascular activity that is catechol mediated, since it can be abolished by reserpinization.
