Transbronchial Lung Biopsy

(A Technical Contribution)

B. Leoncini M.D.1 and R. Palatresi M.D.2

1 Section of Phthisiology, Hospital S. Chiara
2 Clinic of Phthisiology, University of Siena

In 21 patients with diffuse lung disease, 27 transbronchial lung biopsies have been performed by means of flexible forceps introduced into the bronchial tree through a Métras radiopaque catheter with a cuff at its terminal end.

In eight patients with clinically ascertained diffuse pulmonary lesions, biopsies helped to confirm their diagnostic reliability and to evalute complications both in respiratory insufficiency and in pulmonary hypertension. Thirteen patients instead underwent 19 biopsies for diagnostic purposes; 13 were useful and provided definitive results in ten cases. Complications were minor and did not require treatment.
